SHELTER ROCK DISTRICT

One of the keys to the success of the Scouting program is trained volunteer leadership. Proper training doesn’t happen by reading a book or attending every Scout meeting. The Shelter Rock District has developed outstanding and dedicated training teams to help you, as a new leader, to deliver a program and calendar that will be exciting, educational, and safe. That is their job.

When leaders understand the whys and hows of Scouting, they are more effective in their roles and their Scouts win!

Although training may not seem priority importance to you sometimes, it is very important to become trained not only from a legal standpoint, but as your personal responsibility to your unit.

Mandatory Training for Adults

Every registered leader needs to take the following three training courses:

1. Fast Start training for their registered position.

2. This is Scouting

3. Youth Protection training for their registered position.

Cub Scout leaders are considered trained when they have completed:

· Cub Scout Fast Start

· Youth Protection-needs to be taken every two years

· This is Scouting

· Cub Scout Leader Specific Training for their specific registered position within the Pack.

Boy Scout leaders are considered trained when they have completed:

· Boy Scout Fast Start

· Youth Protection-needs to be taken every two years

· This is Scouting

· Boy Scout Leader Specific Training-indoor session

· Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills-camping weekend

· Troop Committee Challenge-The Shelter Rock training team strongly urges all adult leaders, regardless of their position in the troop, to attend this course. It has been proven that a Troop is most successful when its leaders “cross-train” and understand how a troop committee functions.

Boy Scout Troop Committee members are considered trained when they have completed:

· Boy Scout Fast Start

· Youth Protection-needs to be taken every two years

· This is Scouting

· Troop Committee Challenge-The Shelter Rock training team strongly urges all committee members to attend the Boy Scout Leader Specific Training-indoor course. It has been proven that a Troop is most successful when its leaders “cross-train” and understand how a troop functions

Venture Crew Leaders are considered trained when they have completed:

· Venture Fast Start

· Youth Protection-needs to be taken every two years

· This is Scouting

· Venture Leader Specific Training, which is a five-session training course

Taking training once does not make you trained forever. When you change your position in Scouting, you need to take the specific training for your new position. For example, you can’t be a trained Scoutmaster if you have only taken Cub Scout training. Each training course helps you to understand the unique needs of your new position.

Your Scouts deserve the best leader you can be. Take the full training course for your position and make your investment in Scouting count.
